Despite its name, vitamin D3 is technically a hormone rather than a vitamin. Unlike true vitamins, which must be obtained through food, vitamin D3 is produced in the skin from cholesterol when exposed to UVB sunlight. Although the name has remained the same, its role in the body is much more like other hormones.

Why Deficiency Is So Common
Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common. A few minutes of midday summer sun can generate up to 20,000 IU of vitamin D3, yet modern indoor lifestyles, sunscreen use, seasonal changes, and limited dietary sources mean many people never reach optimal levels.

Very high blood levels have also been associated with atrial fibrillation.
Important Note
Patients with hyperparathyroidism, granulomatous diseases such as sarcoidosis or tuberculosis, or certain cancers should only supplement vitamin D under physician supervision because abnormal calcium regulation can occur.
