Rethinking Anti-Inflammatory Medication
Ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin are among the most commonly used medications for pain relief. While NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can be appropriate for short-term relief of minor discomfort, their role in treating orthopedic injuries and degenerative conditions is far more complicated.
For many musculoskeletal injuries, reducing inflammation too early may actually interfere with the body's natural repair process.
Inflammation Isn't Always the Enemy
When tissue is injured, your immune system immediately responds by sending platelets, white blood cells, growth factors, and repair proteins to the damaged area. The swelling, warmth, and soreness associated with an injury are signs that the body has activated its healing response.
Important Note
Acute inflammation is a normal and necessary part of healing. Suppressing it too aggressively may reduce the body's ability to repair injured tissue.
